چکیده

In his article entitled “On Ontological Foundations of Conceptual Modeling” (henceforth OFCM), Boris Wyssusek reviews several approaches that have the common objective of investigating how results from areas such as formal ontology in philosophy, cognitive science, semiotics and linguistics can be employed in the construction of a well-founded theoretical basis for the discipline of conceptual modeling in computer science. Despite the title of his essay, which may let the reader think of an analysis of what the ontological foundations of conceptual modeling are, Wyssusek wonders whether the very idea makes sense, concluding very negatively that “the project of ontologybased conceptual modeling appears to be impossible in principle”. We shall bring here arguments against such conclusion, hoping to convince the readers that the ontology-driven approach to conceptual modeling is well and alive, and that it dramatically improves the quality of information systems. Although it mentions very briefly other approaches, Wyssusek’s article is very much focused on the so-called BWW approach, an adaptation made by Ron Weber and Yair Wand of the original theory proposed by the Argentinean theoretical physicist and philosopher of science Mario Bunge. In that respect, due to the popularity of BWW, a contribution of OFCM is to make explicit the

Developing Ontological Theories for Conceptual Models using Qualitative Research

Conceptual modelling is believed to be at the core of the IS discipline. There have been attempts to develop theoretical foundations for conceptual models, in particular ontological models as axiomatic reference systems. Although the notion of ontology has become popular in modelling theories, criticism has risen as to its philosophical presuppositions. Taking on this criticism, we discuss the ...

On Ontological Foundations of Conceptual Modelling

Failures in information systems development have frequently been attributed to the application of insufficient or faulty information systems development methods. Some of these methods are concerned with the creation of conceptual models, which are used for multiple purposes throughout the information systems development process. Criticism of conceptual modelling methods usually targets their la...

Ontological Foundations of Conceptual Modelling Reconsidered: A Response

In their quest for theoretical foundations of conceptual modelling information systems researchers have turned to various disciplines for inspiration. However, the adaptation of theories, concepts, and vernaculars across disciplines has always proven to be difficult at least. In the debate paper “On Ontological Foundations of Conceptual Modelling” I have subjected the transposition of Mario Bun...

Discussion on the Article "On Ontological Foundations of Conceptual Modelling" by Boris Wyssusek

In this debate paper we follow up on the argumentation given by Boris Wyssusek, who criticizes the use of the BWW-ontology as a foundation of conceptual modelling. In addition, we mention some other possible foundations for conceptual modelling. We have over many years looked at the area of semiotics, given our social constructivistic view of modelling, and we give a brief overview of how semio...
